This study examined the age of acquisition of color and texture concept vocabulary among children aged 3 to 6 years and explored potential age and gender differences. Using convenience sampling, 144 children were assessed with a self-developed instrument, the Mandarin Preschool Children’s Color and Texture Concept Vocabulary Test. The results showed significant age-related differences in both comprehension and production of color and texture vocabulary, but no significant gender differences or age-by-gender interaction effects. Color vocabulary was primarily acquired in comprehension at age three and in production between ages three and four. Texture vocabulary was generally acquired in comprehension between ages three and four and in production between ages four and six. Overall, children’s vocabulary development showed that comprehension preceded production. |
