In Liaozhai zhiyi, erotic writings about love and marriage have been strongly associated with the descriptions of sexual scenes. With the new research viewpoint formed in recent years, the discussions of gender relationships and narrative theories have shed light on the investigation into the love and marriage theme in Liaozhai zhiyi, which occupies nearly one-third of the entire book. This paper explores the multitude of homosexual relations between man-man, woman-woman as well as border crossing illustrated in the book. The intertwined relationships among lust, power, and moral acts are analyzed along with the consideration of the historical and cultural context as well as the independent creative consciousness of the writer. The paper would also focus on the subtle and intricate narrative strategy of Liaozhai zhiyi. It is thus intended to demonstrate how the vigorousness and diversity of erotic aesthetics as well as literati’s profound deliberation of the social culture are embedded in Liaozhai zhiyi. |
