在現代漢語裡，「嚴」字的意義是「嚴肅」、「嚴格」、「莊嚴」、「嚴重」。可是在中古漢語裡，「嚴」有截然不同的意義和用法。「嚴」在佛經中使用得很廣，出現頻率很高。例如「嚴儀、嚴辦、嚴麗、嚴事、嚴整、嚴敕……」等。「嚴」字在中古漢語中到底有幾種意義？其核心詞義是什麼？構詞狀態又如何？語法功能又如何？本文嘗試對佛經中「嚴」字的用法做窮盡式的探索，把「嚴」字的構詞和意義作深入的分析和描寫。說明了「嚴」字的狀況和今天很不一樣。詞彙的變遷是各種語言成分當中最為明顯的，我們唯有針對各時代的語料作細緻的分析，不斷的累積成果，才有可能對古代漢語言的演變有客觀和全面的理解。佛經材料龐大豐碩，它幾乎是提供了我們取之不盡，用之不竭的研究資源，我們可以說，整部大藏經，就是一座珍貴的語言研究的寶庫。

In modern Chinese, the morpheme “yan” means ‘serious; strict; grave’, but it is very different in word structure and meaning in Ancient Chinese. These differences reflected in the language of Chinese Buddhist Texts. In this paper, we will find out how many usages in the Ancient period of the morpheme ‘yan’, and what is its core meaning, we also want to know how it organizes a compound word, its structure rules, etc.
