Wu Wenzhi’s Song shihua quanbian, re-ublished by Jiang Su Guji Chubanshe in ten volumes in 1998, is by far the most complete compilation of poetics of the Song dynasty. However, the compilation is a collaborative work of three hundred people; therefore, there can be inconsistencies. Professor Xu Qing Yun, in “The Revision and Addendum of Song shihua quanbian-Taogu shihua” published in the 24th issue of Dong Wu Zhong Wen Xiao Bao, has pointed out the flaws in Taogu shihua. For the compilation of thirty-eight materials, thirty-three emendations can suggest a significant number of errors. Although Song shihua quanbian includes Sun Guangxian shihua, Sun Guangxian did not produce any notes on poetry. In fact, the notes were extracted from Beimeng suoyan, where Sun reflects on poetry. In my research on Bao Yan Tang Mi Ji, I have given close attention to novels by Song writers. While comparing various versions of Beimeng suoyan, I discover that Sun Guangxian shihua in Song shihua quanbian contains a number of errors. As Ye Dehui (Qing Dynasty) said, compilation of literature requires reliable texts and emendations. Such a finding might help determine a more reliable text for future studies. |
