There are 39 kinds of chariot, including the magnificent one, in the Tomb of Duke Yi of Tseng Kingdom. Hsiao Sheng-chung considers that the so-called Ta-pei is the front chariot of the middle army, not the magnificent flag as Tu Yu has interpreted. However, Hsiao’s interpretation is not without controversy. It was not uncommon in early China that one thing might have many different names. Theses names were all connected with related other things around it. Tu Yu interpreted Ta-pei not only as flag but also as other things. His interpretations were not as limited as Hsiao thought. |
