論「大旆」

On Magnificent Flag or Chariot

曾侯乙墓中有車三十九種，括包大旆。蕭聖中以為「大旆是指中軍前驅的兵車，杜預注理解為旗名是錯誤的。」惟杜預以「旗名」釋大旆固猶有可說，蕭氏所說「中軍前驅的兵車」亦未盡是。蓋一物可以多名之故，必因其與週邊事物有所關聯。古注簡略，故於該處杜預僅以「旗名」為說，它處又有各種注解不一而足；蕭氏所釋，亦得其一端耳。

There are 39 kinds of chariot, including the magnificent one, in the Tomb of Duke Yi of Tseng Kingdom. Hsiao Sheng-chung considers that the so-called Ta-pei is the front chariot of the middle army, not the magnificent flag as Tu Yu has interpreted. However, Hsiao’s interpretation is not without controversy. It was not uncommon in early China that one thing might have many different names. Theses names were all connected with related other things around it. Tu Yu interpreted Ta-pei not only as flag but also as other things. His interpretations were not as limited as Hsiao thought.
