Professor Pi Shu-Min once claimed that the materials for writing The Dream of Red Chamber were not only obtained from Jiangning’s Official of Royal Clothes Cao Yin’s family but also originated from Suzhou’s Official of Royal Clothes Li Xu’s family. He further revealed that Li Xu’s eldest son Li Yi-Ding was the real identity of Zhi-Yan Zhai, a person that played an important role in the creation process of the novel. While insufficient evidence prevented this proposition from acquiring general agreement, some scholars were inspired by it and suggested, in the hope of solving the deadlock of “who Zhi-Yan was” in Red studies, that the real identity of Zhi-Yan Zhai was Li Yi-Ding’s youngest brother Li Yi-Nai. Nonetheless, scholars’ judgments on Li Yi-Nai’s birth year differed by nearly two decades, posing a basic obstacle to whether this hypothesis can continue to develop. In view of this, this article once again scrutinizes and analyzes the relevant poems and articles written by Li Xu’s subordinates Shen You-Yuan, Cheng Da-Ke, Li Guo, etc. and the existing Genealogy of the Jiang Family in Changyi, which has been edited and collated six times. The conclusion is that Li Yi-Nai was Li Xu’s third son, who ended up ranking second (because his second elder brother died early), and was born on September 15th in the 55th year of Kang-Xi era. |
