Bender visual-motor gestalt figures was adopted to investigate perceptual distortions manifested in schizophrenics. Distortions has been shown to emerge from the inability to attend to figural angularity and relationship among the constituents. Figural rotation and fragmentation could be largely reduced through tactile-mode processing. Due to the shortage of experimental methods, it is inapppropriate to attribute this improvement to the effect of preprocessing or central processing per se. The measurement of visual detection threshold for each Bender figure reflects some correlation with the preceptual distortion of the whole figure. By combining the experimental results thus far collected, it is still immature to claim the existence of a true single mechanism which is responsible for perceptual distortions generated in Bender-Gestalt test. |
