The special edition was organized by Professor Shane Wang, who unfortunately passed away before its completion. Choosing social exclusion as the focal topic reflects Shane Wang’s hope that helping professionals will notice the social exclusion of their clients and move the focus of their interventions beyond the level of individuals to that of social structures. Three of the essays in this edition focus on populations that are socially excluded, namely gay men, mothers of children with disabilities, and indigenous elders. Chung demonstrates the existence of social exclusion and its negative impact on gay men. Hung shows that mothers of children with disabilities suffer not because of the care burden, but because of social stigma. Wang & Yang demonstrate that helping professionals have failed to identify that many interpersonal conflicts surrounding home care in indigenous communities are actually caused by a conflict between government policy and indigenous culture. This oversight can reinforce acial discrimination by focusing on home care workers and clients as a source of problems. |
