The debate between the Global Green New Deal (GGND) and degrowth treats the two approaches, likely the two methods with the highest potential to effectively mitigate climate change, as incompatible. Under this dichotomy, Noam Chomsky has been labelled as pro-GGND and anti-degrowth. By way of analyzing Chomsky’s decades-long work on public decision-making, this article points out the absurdity of such a dichotomy. It highlights the striking similarity between Chomsky’s anarchist thinking and the degrowth movement in their visions of good life, freedom, and equality, and their usage of such visions in inspiring the public. The renewal of the public consciousness creates inducive conditions for implementing the GGND, which can then facilitate the convergent“Green New Deal without growth.”In sum, Chomsky’s anarchist insights can be surprisingly instrumental in nudging the two sides to work with rather than against each other. |
