Recording the Strange, Commenting, and Reminiscing: The Writing Motivation and Narrative Strategies in Yu Yue’s Youtai Xian Guan Bi Ji

本文旨在探討俞樾的《右台仙館筆記》，思考書中有關中外異聞的接受與理解，解析其存錄、評述、追憶三種敘事策略，探究相關書寫動機及其對志怪敘事的承續和轉化。本文首先探討俞樾對於日本異聞的接受和錄存，如何將外來異聞與自身的學術體系結合，表現出對外來文化的吸納和轉化。其次則分析俞樾面對地方風俗和民間信仰，通過紀錄、引證與評述，展現了批判性認識意義。最後，論述俞樾在《右台仙館筆記》中通過回憶親族和故鄉的鬼魂敘事，表達對親人的懷念與情感意涵。本文認為，俞樾在《右台仙館筆記》中透過異聞錄存、風俗批評與親族追憶三種策略，不僅承續傳統志怪文類，亦融合外來文化與個人情感，展現出創新的敘事特質與情意表述。

This paper examines Yu Yue’s Youtai Xian Guan Bi Ji, with a focus on his reception and understanding of both Chinese and foreign strange tales. It analyzes three narrative strategies employed in the text—recording, commentary, and reminiscence—to investigate Yu Yue’s motivations for writing, as well as his continuation and transformation of the traditional zhiguai genre. The study first explores Yu Yue’s reception and documentation of Japanese strange tales, highlighting how he integrates these foreign accounts into his scholarly framework, thereby demonstrating an active process of cultural assimilation and transformation. It then examines how Yu Yue engages with local customs and folk beliefs, showcasing a critical perspective through detailed recording, citation, and commentary. Finally, it discusses how Yu Yue invokes the memories of family and hometown through ghost narratives, expressing deep nostalgia and personal emotions. This paper argues that by employing the strategies of recording foreign anomalies, critiquing local traditions, and reminiscing about kinship, Yu Yue not only preserves the zhiguai literary tradition but also innovates it by incorporating external cultural elements and personal sentiment, thus creating a distinctive narrative style characterized by both innovation and emotional articulation.
