Algorithmic activism contributes to spreading the message of a politician or movement, by interacting with the post in order to trigger the algorithms of the social media, so that it boosts the popularity rankings of this message and its messenger. In Facebook we see that the number of interactions, and especially shares will make your post more visible on the News Feed of your followers. The more followers the populist party has, the more they will be able to help the party in its claim on‘the voice of the people’. The high-visibility of the populist party has boosted its online and offline mobilization power. Digitalization forces us to look at populism as a digitally meditated communicative relation. This paper presents an analysis that Belgian populist radical right party (Vlaams Belang) uses social media (Facebook) not only to position itself as the ture representative of the Flemish people, but to hold mass protest meeting against‘Vivaldi’coalition. |
