This paper addresses the digitalization of the sonic field by employing the techno-mathematical approach of German media archaeologies. Following Kittlerian’s three marked stages of the alphabet, of analogue media, and of digital computer, the project places special emphasis on the relation between analogue and digital media to investigate how physical sound events can be transformed into digital codes that can be stored, transmitted, and processed. To do this, it is crucial to address Kittler’s articulation of Lacanian Real and Fourier Transform such that the temporal Real can be symbolized with the aid of Fourier mathematics, thus creating the necessary precondition for a method that Kittler termed Time Axis Manipulation. Finally, the techniques of simulating and manipulating any sound events, with the digital computer as a universal machine, which can be regarded as a musical instrument in creating any music in operation of numerical values, highlights Kittler’s later concern with cultural mathematics. |
