The purpose of this paper is to develop and validate a drug/substance abuse literacy scale for Taiwanese adolescents and to make a preliminary comparison of differences in drug/substance abuse cognition, attitudes, and behaviors among adolescents of different genders and places of residence. In the pilot phase, this study collected data from a total of 122 adolescents (61 males and 61 females) in the Kaohsiung and Pingtung areas using convenience sampling. Exploratory factor analysis was used to extract three dimensions:“self-awareness”,“critical thinking”and“decision-making”, which explained a total of 63.51% of the variance, and the overall internal consistency reliability was .906. An independent sample t-test was then used to preliminarily explore the current status and differences in drug/substance abuse literacy among adolescents. The results showed that drug/ substance abuse literacy among adolescent girls was significantly higher than that among adolescent boys, while there was no significant difference in drug/substance abuse literacy by region of residence; the most common source of information on drug/substance abuse was obtained from teachers. This study suggests that the use of this questionnaire can be expanded to junior high schools, high schools, and vocational colleges in the future. This will help educational administration agencies understand adolescents’cognition, ability, and attitude toward drug/substance abuse, so as to enhance teachers’ability to design appropriate drug/substance abuse literacy content and teaching strategies. The results of this study can serve as a reference for health units and educational institutions to formulate supporting plans and future related research. |
