This study delves into the language policies of the European Union (EU) and examines their potential implications for Taiwan's bilingual education (BE). Renowned for its extensive experiences and significant contributions in the domain of language policy and education, the EU has pioneered initiatives such as the creation of the Common European Framework of Reference for Language Learning and the promotion of multilingual education. Utilizing narrative literature review and policy analysis methodologies, this research yields five findings: The EU's commitment to linguistic diversity, the emphasis on linguistic rights, the advocacy of multilingualism and plurilingualism, the role of English as a lingua franca (ELF) within the EU, and the various implementation strategies. Drawing on these insights, the study proposes three implications for enhancing Taiwan's BE: embracing linguistic diversity, balancing the prominence of English with the richness of multilingualism, and adopting multifaceted strategies for implementation. This research offers a fresh perspective on language policy and its potential transformative impact on bilingual education, providing valuable lessons from the EU context to inform and inspire Taiwan's landscape of BE. |
