It's doubtless that the vernacular literature movement in the late Ching and early Republic has been an unprecedented huge change for the history of Chinese literature! When facing this overwhelming wave, the traditional academic master Mr. Chang-Tai-Yen who had been raised up by classical works finally surrendered to the epoch. Mr. Chang has been commonly recognized by the literati that he was totally against the vernacular, actually there were certain conditions with his opposition which were pretty close to other scholars such as Mr. Hu-Shyh. We suggest that there is necessity for further research. Why Mr. Chang had been misunderstood for almost a century? Also, Mr. Chang left us some vernacular literature works which certainly reflect his opinions and thoughts about vernacular literature. And all of these will be further discussed and explored in this article. |
