Xue Xue is a literati of Qing Dynasty with multiple characters, poet, poetry theorist and doctor. He made enormous contributions to the poet theory of Qing Dynasty, and his medical profession also enjoyed same popularity with Ye Gui, the founder of Science of Epidemic Febrile Disease. After Xue Xue passed away, nothing medical related content had been brought up in the epitaph written by his grandson, Xue Shouyu.Xue Shouyu emphasized on Confucianism over medicine, that revealed that despite the combination of medicine and Confucianism, the concept of “Confucian medicine” as the most important standard for judging doctors in the Ming and Qing Dynasties was still far more symbolic than a certain social community. This article starts from the identity of a poet and a doctor. Through the research of various trivial segment of literature and historical materials, it depicts the life picture of the poet Xue Xue, explores his inheritance and innovation in the process of retelling and interpretation of his teacher Ye Xie’s “Yuan Shi” poetic theory, and discusses the disagreements and differences related to Confucianism and medicine between both doctors, Xue Xue and Ye Gui. |
