Wen-Sen Luo was a journalist who accompanied Taiwan’s transition from authoritarianism to democracy. He dedicated his life to assisting Asahi Shimbun covering local news in Taiwan. Japanese scholars are awed by his extraordinary experience. As a student, he endured war and revolution, the transfer of sovereignty, and large-scale societal changes. Such adversities formed his integrity and perseverance and honed his excellent language skills. After the Nationalist government took over Taiwan, the relation between the state and the political party lost its balance. Kuomintang monopolized the governmental power, giving its members superior status over the general public. Luo became a member of Kuomintang and utilized these privileges to travel outside of Taiwan. His travels broadened his global view and understanding of international relations and inspired him to let the world learn about Taiwan. His visits to various major foreign cities, sharing news of Taiwanese social and political activities with international media, have definite influence on the democratic development of Taiwan. |
