Closely associated with local fishery product processing, settlement development, and fishing practices, the fish cooking kiln is considered an important and characteristic industrial resource in Penghu. However, because of a decrease in fishery resources and the replacement of traditional cooking methods by contemporary techniques, the once-thriving practice with the kiln has faded, with only a few operators still using it. Examining four fish cooking kilns located in Nanliao and Hongluo in Huxi Township, Houliao in Baisha Township, and Huazhai in Wangan Township, this study explored recent opportunities for the transformation of the abandoned kilns, their integration into contemporary life, and the re-contextualized roles they have been given. The research methodology primarily involved a literature review and field observations. The literature review examined past studies on industrial reutilization of fish cooking kilns as well as local industrial resources, and field observations at the sites of kiln reutilization were arranged to clarify the method for operating these reutilized fish cooking kilns. The preliminary findings indicate that reutilization plans for fish cooking kilns have been implemented in several directions, including the redevelopment of tourist attraction sites, integration with local tourism resources, repositioning of relevant sites for environmental education, and design of experiential activities. The enrichment of the cultural resources surrounding fish cooking kilns will create new opportunities for their utilization. |
