This innovative elective course for general education combines two axes, namely“online English resources”and“globalization.”The teaching objectives for this course are as follows: (1) students should be able to understand the contents of the online English resources, (2) students should be able to participate in the discussion of internationalized topics through English social media, and (3) students should be able to develop multicultural perceptions and thinking through the online English resources. The first objective fulfills the first axis,“online English resources,”which comprises five units: Electronic News Media, Online English Learning Resources, World Higher Education, Workplace English, and Cross-cultural Awareness. To ensure that the students fully understand the assigned online materials, they are required to complete a weekly worksheet. The second and third objectives can be achieved by having students join international groups on Facebook and through“Cross-cultural Awareness,”respectively. The former requires the submission of an individual term paper, whereas the latter requires final group presentations. Additionally, other instruments for assessment and research include a midterm exam and a questionnaire on students’perceptions of global issues. The analysis of the students’worksheets and midterm exams shows that most students attain a certain degree of understanding of the assigned online resources, except for one or two units. Another conclusion drawn from the students’term papers, final group presentations, and questionnaire results is that the course effectively expands students’global perspectives. Furthermore, a lecture by a professional specialist and a symposium with international students achieve good results. Finally, teachers’reflections suggest future scope of improvement to enhance students’learning. |
