Product quality remains undiscussed in the empirical literature on trade effects of antidumping measures. This research analyzes the trade effects of Taiwanese firms and the impact of quality heterogeneity on trade effects for Taiwanese firms by examining 87 cases of antidumping duties imposed from 2002 to 2015. Using the method of the system GMM, the empirical results show that trade destruction in the prosecuted country is insignificant, though it has a significantly negative impact on relatively high-quality products. Furthermore, the trade deflection and trade depression effects of exporting to other countries are significant. In general, the total trade effect caused by antidumping measures is negative, and mainly comes from the effect of trade depression. However, if other factors are considered, such as the effect of product quality improvement, the export of Taiwan's products involved during the antidumping duty period may actually increase. |
