Antagonism in Contemporary Art Conservation Practice: Artist Intention Versus Material Authenticity

This study analyzed the value of the material and immaterial conditions of an artwork in the context of a conservation decision-making process. Physical structure and aesthetics should be considered to ensure an art object’s meaning is preserved. However, conflicts may emerge during the restoration of contemporary artworks when factors such as artist’s intention and material authenticity conflict with each other.
Gaining an understanding of all significance of an art work is essential in applying a critical methodology for conservation. Focusing on one factor may result in the subordination of another in attempts at recovering or preserving the art object’s meaning and the viewer’s aesthetic experience.
