In addition to being a tool of the government, textbooks also reflect social culture and serve as a main link between teachers and students’teaching and learning experiences. Middle school Chinese textbooks focuses on the editing style of selected texts. In addition to fitting the requirements of the national curriculum, textbooks must also conform to contemporary trends. After the selection of texts is confirmed, front-line teaching will also be affected. After the implementation of the“Curriculum Guidelines of 12-Year Basic Education,”integration of 19 core issues was proposed in order to cultivate students’critical thinking and problem solving abilities. Among these, gender equality is the most important issue. The Hanlin Publishing Company included a self-study article“Gingsberg: A Fighter for Gender Equality”in the sixth volume of their Chinese language textbook, with“gender issues”clearly indicated in the title. Currently, the inclusion of multiple gender identities in“gender equality education”remains controversial. How should the compilation of middle school textbooks take into account both the national curriculum and relevant controversies? This study collects relevant data for analysis, combing through the text of textbooks, and discusses the correlation between the selected texts, the national curriculum and the“Gender Education Equality Act,”as well as the social and cultural outlooks represented. |
