International commercial sperm banks (ICSBs) are crucial institutions for accessing reproductive resources in contemporary society. However, existing research lacks exploration into how they influence atypical reproductive practices among women and shape third-party reproductive cultures. Therefore, this study employs documentary analysis, focusing on two Danish-origin ICSBs, to analyze all texts and 111 images on their official websites to comprehend their narratives and implications. This paper believes that ICSBs themselves serve as symbols and products of the modernity of assisted reproductive technologies, as well as sites for the exchange of symbols and desires. They position themselves as modern, scientific, efficient, and empathetic leaders in the reproductive industry and advocates for women, emphasizing imagery such as ''the new-age working mother'', ''anonymous heroes'', ''female self-determination'', and ''mother-baby relationship'', along with the narrative axis of ''dreams come true''. Through triggering mechanisms of ''distinction'' and ''imagination'', they strengthen users' intentions and actions towards reproduction, ultimately stimulating reproductive consumption among users. |
