After the mediation theory was put forward by European scholars, the scholars excluded the factors of political economy from the construction process of the theory intentionally or unintentionally, thus ignoring the possible connection between the mediation theory and political economy. This can be seen from the recent discussions of concepts of mediatization, whether institutionalist or social constructionists, they have failed in explaining the question of "why some fields can be mediated and others are not", and examining the political and economic factors behind this problem can fill the gap of theory in this regard. In response to the above question, firstly this paper introduces key concepts proposed in the mediatization theory community in recent years, and not only provides a critical understanding of these concepts, but also illustrates their possible connection with political economy. Secondly, focusing on the mediatization of scholarly communication, we will take a western journal database company as an example to illustrate that the database was originally used as a medium for calculating citation rates, but in the process of constructing the communicative figurations, the publishers integrated scholars, libraries, Universities and government units into the formation, thereby transforming into this medium for certifying knowledge productivity. The consequence is that the name of the database and the numerical value of its influence are inscribed in the publication records of scholars, and the symbol of technology is also inscribed in the copyright page of academic journals, which has become a normal practice of scholarly communication. Through the description of the field of scholarly communication, this paper believes that mediatization research should start from the perspective of political economy, and we also try to point out three possible future key issues, so as to better expand the research scope of mediatization theory. |
