This paper discusses the "China Dream" as a metaphor in political and social contexts through four blockbusters, namely, Hero, Confucius, Detective Dee and the Mystery of the Phantom Flame and American Dreams in China. Hero and Confucius outline the current Chinese political philosophy-with Tian Xia as theory of the state, and Confucianism as social ethics. Then what role do the individuals play under such a framework? Detective Dee and the Mystery of the Phantom Flame elaborates on the effectiveness of reform within the institution, while American Dreams in China further expounds the canonical role of private entrepreneurs. |
