In this article, the author developed a framework for the analysis of Next Weekly's externalities by reviewing articles for media externalities, especially Edwin Baker's category system. In addition, we classified externalities into two types as follows: production and consumption. The author collected the cover stories of Next Weekly from 2001–2009 using random sampling, which included 96 journals, 192 volumes, and 479 pieces of news. The results showed that 21.7% of news pieces were “public sphere-hard news” and 51.8% of news pieces were “private sphere-soft news”. There were 43 out of 82 pieces focusing on political news stressed the private sphere. Other news pieces from Next Weekly were subject to content restrictions (i.e., violence and pornography). This may have influenced the reaction of teenagers and other members of the community. |
