Several Core Concepts of Master Hsing Yun's Humanistic Buddhism Thought in His Youth

This paper tries to make a thorough and detailed study for the first time towards the thought of Humanistic Buddhism of Master Hsing Yun in his youth. The author believes that the meanings of the thoughts of Humanistic Buddhism by Master Hsing Yun in his youth are rich and deep. Four concepts in particular, “the human Buddha”, “Buddhist revolution”, “youth preaching” and “Buddhism popularity and socialization”, were embodied in Master Hsing Yun's theory of ''New Buddhism''. These represent the core concepts and ideas that Master Hsing Yun held in this period. However, these so-called concepts and related ideology opened “four aims” which were proposed and practiced by the Fo Guang Shan monastic community late in the 1960s. Moreover, some basic, core and consistent ideas permeated the theory and practice of Humanistic Buddhism by Master Hsing Yun throughout his entire lifetime until today. This article accordingly appeals to give more attention on the important historical pivotal role which youth monks acted towards Taiwanese Humanistic Buddhism in 1950s, among these young people was the now famous Venerable Master Hsing Yun.
