The experience in group is material for assessment, clue for treatment, and gate for therapist to reflect his/her own issues and to improve therapeutic skill. When a member's autonomy is restricted, although the member possibly feels frustrated or unsatisfied, he/she still has chance to feel safe due to firm group rule which fortifies the group structure. If being cared through empathy from the therapist because of understanding the restriction of autonomy, the member has will to join group more. Trozter et al. (1979) ever explored the elements of group structure and named these elements as membership, physical structure, time, activities, norms, and purpose. The issue of restricted autonomy reflects in the issues of membership and purpose of group structure. If the therapists focus more on group dynamics issues even in a mandatory group, he/she can improve the group function more smoothly. |
