Purpose: The aim of this study was to explore the effects of Taiji Qigong activity has on the anxiety and depression for psychiatric inpatients. Methods: This quasi-experimental designed study included experimental group who received daily 3D-minute Taiji Qigong activity training program, and the control group who received usually care during the hospitalized. Participants were recruited schizophrenia or depression from two acute psychiatric wards at a medical center in Taipei City. A total of 108 participants were equally assigned to either experimental group or control group. The measurements of this study includes the hospital anxiety and depression scale (HADS), blood pressure, heart rate, and sleep hour monitor on daily basis. The anxiety and depression scores were collected in the pre-test within 3 days after admission and the post-test before the discharge. Results: There were 40(74.1%) of female, 35(64.8%) of depression, average of age 46.65, and the mean of participant 23.8 in the experimental group. The pre-test of characteristics of variables were no statistics different expected gender between both groups. The results of post-test revealed significant differences of the anxiety scores between the experimental group and the control group by GEE, p=.03. There was no significant differences in the scores of depression, and the physiological data. The qualitative analyses showed as one patient said "living in the moment..., making the thoughts clear and the mood stable, to relax, to help the treatment of mental illness, to perceive the security, to avoid the fear and build the self-confidence.". Conclusions: The results of this study have shown Taiji Qigong activity can improve anxiety symptoms for acute psychiatric inpatients. If psychiatric nurses can continue to provide a good health promotion activity for patients. There will be helpful in recovery of patient's function. |
