In the “Treatise on Administrative Geography” of Xuhan Shu, it marks the citiesunder the jurisdiction of Zhangye by listing a number of terms of official titles. Examining the usage of these terms in the Xuhan Shu and other historical records as well as in the bamboo and wooden slips excavated from Han tombs, I offer different explanations and punctuation for these terms from the previous ones in the Zhonghua shuju's edition of Xuhan shu. I suggest that Zhangye in the late Han period actually administered four cities instead of five according to my new explanation and punctuation of these terms. |
