Many Early Han dynasty offices and their salary rankings are listed in the Zhilü(salary regulations)in the “Legal Text of Year 2” bamboo slips recently unearthed at Zhangjiashan. By bringing together the Zhilü with relevant materials from the Hanshu, we may be better able to reconstruct the structure of the central government officials with salary 2,000 dan(石)in the early Han and also to further the study of the transformations of the bureaucracy in the Western Han. This paper examines the Palace Garrison(Weiwei衞尉), focusing on three offices in particular, the Weiwei wubaijiang, Weiwei shili, and Weiguan jiaozhang, which are all listed in the Zhilü but not found in the Table of Officials in the Hanshu. The primary aim of this essay is to research the basic issues concerned with the bureaucracy such as the properties, salary rankings and duties of the above three officials. By offering some new interpretations of these offices, this essay aims to provide a solid foundation for the advancement of studies on the system of military officials in the central government. Finally, we suggest some new directions for further research on the Han bureaucratic and military systems. |
