This article reconsiders the Baiyi-lingzhi白衣領職 from the Jin to the Southern Dynasties. In the Jin Dynasty, it was one kind of special treatments for the former officials who had been discharged from their duties. However, in the Southern Dynasties, it was changed into one kind of punishments for the officials who had made mistakes, which was lighter than the Mian-guan免官. The transformation of Baiyi-lingzhi shows how the system of bureaucracy advanced in the Southern Dynasties. In addition, the Baiyi-lingzhi could probably be regarded as one of the origins of the Mian-suojuguan免所居官in the Mian-guan system of the Tang Dynasty. |
