“Cylinder”is a commonly used geometric surface in map projection. "Central cylindrical projection" is a type of "perspective projection" that uses the "cylinder" as the projection surface and the center of the reference globe as the projection center. "Mercator projection" also uses the "cylinder" as the projection surface but employs a mathematical projection method to achieve specific projection properties. In other words, "Mercator projection" is not a "perspective projection." This article introduces these two projections for clarifying the differences between them. |
