In the 1930s, due to the war launched by Japan, the supply of wood and various natural resources was limited. The Japanese government required researchers to study alternative materials for pulp. By 1932, they successfully developed the technology of using the magnesium bisulfite method to manufacture bagasse pulp, it making bagasse pulp production possible. At that time, the construction plan for the Dadu Paper (Pulp) Mill was large-scale and very forward-looking. Besides setting up complete production facilities, a dormitory area with comprehensive facilities was built to stabilize the lives of employees. These advanced working environments and living facilities, along with the introduction of highly educated technical and management talents to Dadu, had a positive impact on the economy, living culture, education, and talent vision of Dadu. In 1941, Dadu Paper Mill also established a ''Training Institute,'' equivalent to a senior vocational high school. It not only trained cadres for the mill, but those talents later became technical and managerial leaders in Taiwan's paper industry, and even in the paper industries of Southeast Asian countries in the 70s and 80s. Unfortunately, Dadu Paper Mill has long been stopped and demolished, leaving no trace of the past. Hopefully, this article will reconstruct the amazing story of Dadu Paper Mill and how its outstanding predecessors from Dadu contributed to the development of the paper industry in Taiwan, Southeast Asia, and China. It may become a model for the future Dadu younger generation to learn and follow, ensuring the legend of Dadu continues to spread for a long time. |
