Sustainable development is one of the most widely discussed concepts of recent times. This term, or even buzzword, appears in a range of contexts, such as academia, public policy, business, social movement and mass media. However, implementation deficits have meant that little real progress has been made towards a genuinely sustainable future. In order to advance the transformations required to overcome sustainability challenges, sustainability transition studies focuses on regimes. This paper investigates the “Spiritual Environmentalism” promoted by Master Sheng-Yen, and argues that it could facilitate the kinds of changes in social norms and values which are crucial factors in sustainability transition. This paper uses insights from sustainability transition studies and “Spiritual Environmentalism” to contribute to the discussion and implementation of sustainable development. |
