With compassion, wisdom and religious devotion, Venerable Master Hsing Yun advocates humanistic Buddhism. He has realized the ambition to“promote Buddhism through culture, to cultivate talents through education, to benefit society through charity, and to purify people's minds through mutual practice.”Through Master Hsing Yun's Dharma promotion, practice of Zen not only enlightens people's way of thinking but also helps them find spiritual belonging. If modern people can practice Master's Life Zen whose tenet is“promoting Dharma and benefiting all beings,”they will see life in a different light and gain well-being.
This thesis studies the practice and aesthetics of Life Zen presented by Venerable Master Hsing Yun in his promotion of humanistic Buddhism. With the tenet of“Dharma as substance and worldly learning for application,”Master Hsing Yun exhibits the aesthetics of Zen through literature, calligraphy, drama, choreography, architecture, education, and moral arts to reveal a deep sense of beauty and perfection. Master Hsing Yun, aware of contemporary trends, is committed to promoting Buddhist education, culture, charity and Dharma, and at the same time he founds the transcendental theory of humanistic Buddhism. The unity of Zen and aesthetics is one of the highest manifestations of humanistic Buddhism in Master's practice. Therefore, this study explores the development of Linji School of Zen and Master Hsing Yun's humanistic Buddhism, and probes into how Zen perceives nature and modernization. Then we will indicate that the spirit of Zen manifests the purification of mind and the sense of beauty and perfection. In Buddhist teachings practiced in the real world, the study of Zen aesthetics has unique meaning and value. |
