The thesis starts from the interdisciplinary relationship between religion and literature. Analyzing the religious aspect displayed and discussed in the literature of a Japanese Catholic writer, Endo Shusaku, I attempt to think over how human being, a doer of interpretation when reading and interpreting, encounters the divine discourse concealed in the text created by the author of religious literature. Meanwhile, the investigations of the religious aspect and its duality—the epiphany and the hidden in the divine discourse—also serve to remark the special location and significance of Endo's works on the map of the interdisciplinary study between religion and literature in the context of Japanese Modern Literature. |
