Secular Sermons thrived in the Tang Dynasty and the Five Dynasties. Historical records described the thronging prosperity of a famous secular sermon monk ''Wen -xu'' of Chang 'an's Hui-chang Temple. However, none of the contents of these sermons were preserved. Among the literatures discovered in Dunhuang, there are quite an amount of prose, poetry, and works of secular sermon by a secular sermon monk, Master Yuan-jian (also known as Yun-bian), of the Hou-Tang and Hou-Chou Dynasty; also discovered were notes and Buddhist literature of the Sung Dynasty. This study tends to join historical records and Dunhuang literature to relate the life of Master Yuan-jian and conduct a conclusive study on his works. |
