The cultural morphology of the algal symbionts of Cladonia rangiferina and Parmelia caperata, which were collected from various environmental habitats in different parts of the world, was studied. According to the criteria of vegetative cell characteristics and colony features, it was found that the algae isolated from different specimens of the same species of lichen collected from different localities were different. This finding indicated that, at the species level, lichen fungi were not specific toward their algal symbionts. |
