Purpose: The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of single-session treatment of recurrent thyroid cystic nodules with percutaneous ethanol injection (PEI). Method: Forty recurrent thyroid cystic nodules in 40 patients were treated with ultrasound-guided singlesession PEI of 95% ethanol from January 2018 to June 2020. Follow-up ultrasound was performed 1, 3 and 6 months after PEI. At baseline and each follow-up examination, nodule volume, thyroid function, the symptom score (0-10), the cosmetic grade (1-4), volume reduction ratio (VRR) and complications were evaluated. Therapeutic success was defined as VRR > 50% at last follow up. Results: Mean volume of the index nodule was 22.7±21.8 mL (range, 2.6–100 mL). After PEI, it decreased at 1 month (5.60±5.99 mL, p<0.0001), 3 months (2.55±3.57 mL, p<0.0001) and 6 months (1.24±2.02 mL, p<0.0001). The therapeutic success rate was 100% and the mean VRR was 93.5%±7.81% for all treated nodules at last follow-up. The mean symptom score decreased from 6.18±0.59 to 0.65±0.58 and the mean cosmetic grade also decreased from 4.00±0.00 to 1.10±0.30 at last follow up. The thyroid function was normal at baseline and after PEI. No major complications were noted at the procedure or during follow up. Conclusion: Single-session PEI might be effective for the treatment of recurrent thyroid cystic nodules. |
