In the 1960s and 1970s, existentialism caused a wave in Taiwan. The introduction and exploration of Gabriel Marcel’s philosophy during this trend are phenomena worthy of our attention. Sartre divided existentialism into atheistic existentialism and theistic existentialism, where Marcel was classified as the latter. In comparison to Camus’and Sartre’s atheistic existentialism, Marcel, as a representative of French theistic existentialism, did not receive much attention in Taiwan at the beginning. However, thanks to the dedication of scholars with a Christian background, Marcel’s philosophy has gained more attention. With a focus on the exploration of Marcel’s thoughts in Taiwan, this paper aims to, from the introduction to and development of existentialism in Taiwan, study the entire history of inheritance and acceptance of existentialism, based on which the status of Marcel is highlighted. After that, the paper further focuses on the discussion of the relevant results of Taiwanese scholars’research on the philosophy of Marcel. |
