This work providesa syntactic account ofVP-khôngquestions in Vietnamese. We begin by pointingout potential problems in Duffield’s (2013a)predicate-raising analysis to VP-khôngquestions. First, it is unclear why raising the predicate to the left of the negatorkhôngcouldturn a declarative intoa question. Second,Duffield’s analysiscannot account for the occurrence of TP-leveladverbs between the subject and the predicate. Third, contrary toaclaim in Duffield’s analysis, the topic marker thìis actually compatiblewith VP-khôngquestions. To deal withthese problems,we argue foran alternative analysis which involves Neg-to-C movement and theraising of a remnant TP. |
