In this paper, the Sina Weibo super topic group“the Distinguished Gathering of Astronauts”is used as a case study to explore misogynistic discourses on Chinese social media through discourse analysis. The findings reveal that online misogyny is highly comparable to popular feminism in China. Misogynists appear to use discourses to construct derogatory mirrored identities for both men and women. In addition, they form secret misogynist alliances to collectively counterattack online feminist movements. The interplay of elements such as Chinese traditional historical culture, the authority discourse, and commercial platforms leads to the formation of a more complex“mirror city”than the“funhouse mirror”and limits the political potential of Chinese digital feminism. |
