Gynecologic cancer patients have strong physical, psychological and social impact since cancer diagnosed, then living with long-term stress. Coexistence with disease and adaptation to disease stress are important issues for gynecologic cancer patients. Cancer patients’coping behaviours may affect their psychological health and quality of life. The aim of this study was to carry out the validation of the Brief Coping Orientation to Problem Experienced (Brief COPE) inventory to measure coping strategies among gynecological cancer patients. The Chinese version of the Brief COPE was administered in a sample of 170 gynecologic cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy with a mean age of 57 years. We conducted exploratory factor analysis (EFA) of the Brief COPE. The EFA identified six factors, which explained 58% of the total variance. The six factors which we identified as“taking action and positive framing”,“social and emotional support”,“religious coping”,“denial and avoidance”,“self-blame”,“humor”. The analysis revealed that the most frequently used coping strategies were“taking action and positive framing”,“social and emotional support”, and“religious coping”. The least frequently used coping strategy was“denial and avoidance”. This study provides preliminary results of the coping strategies among gynecological cancer patients, which can be applied in clinical care to provide appropriate interventions to promote the disease adaptation of gynecological cancer patients. |
