Dr. Hsu Jin (1893-1979) was an early elite in Taiwan who received formal Western medical education. This article is a historical research. The historical documents used include the Hsu family story, the oral narrations of Dr. Xu Jin’s third son. We compare it with historical materials such as the Taiwan Archives of Taiwan Governor-General's Office and Taiwan Daily Newspaper. Hsu Jin suffered from smallpox when he was a child, experienced the plague epidemic in Lukang, and witnessed the tragic scenes of burned streets. Later, he was admitted to the Taiwan Governor's Medical School as a government-funded student and worked as a public health doctor after graduation. However, he encountered a cholera epidemic and cooperated with the police to enforce quarantine. He was mocked by the villagers, which made him feel discouraged about his career. Dr. Hsu was born in a time of miasma, he served as a public health doctor and worked hard to carry out anti-epidemic tasks and witnessed Taiwan's escape from the epidemic. His life of fighting the epidemic is worthy of learning by future generations in the medical field. |
