As a member state of ASEAN, Brunei Darussalam has historically maintained a close relationship with China. In recent years, following China’s implementation of the Belt and Road Initiative, there has been a rise in Chinese FDIs, enterprises and new migrants in Brunei. This new phenomenon has brought some implications to the local society. Using interview data collected from 17 Chinese Bruneian (13 male and 4 female) elites in various fields encompassing government, business, community and education, this article critically examines the responses of the ethnic Chinese on the BRI in Brunei. Considering the internal dynamics of the Chinese community, business environment and society structures in Brunei, the article argues that most Chinese Bruneians lack comprehensive understanding of the BRI; and they do not think that the BRI benefit them sufficiently. The article proposes that for the BRI to be successful in Brunei, more efforts need to be invested in promoting people-to-people exchange, open communication, information sharing, mutual trust and downstream business opportunities. |
