In 2006, the per capita carbon dioxide emissions in Taiwan reached 13.19 metric tons, nearly 3 times the global average. After the exclusion of the OPEC countries, this emission level ranked Taiwan as the 7th highest in the world for that year. Even after adjustments for international trade and forest carbon sequestration, the net per capita carbon dioxide emission for Taiwan still stood at 11.01 metric tons. Policy initiatives should be taken soon to reduce such emission level. In case once an international agreement is reached to start charging high net per capita carbon dioxide emission countries for their excess carbon dioxide emissions, Taiwan economy would not suffer severely. |
