Energy conservation and greenhouse gas reductions are the major components of the present energy policy in Taiwan. The production of electricity from nuclear source has resulted in a significant reduction in atmospheric emissions and in the consumption of conventional fossil fuels from what otherwise would have occurred. Over the period 1977-2007, electricity generated by Taiwan's nuclear power plants averted the following cumulative greenhouse gas emissions: 828 million tonnes of CO2, 2.3 million tonnes of NOx, 14 thousand tonnes of VOCs, and 5 thousand tonnes of CH4. In addition, nuclear energy production displaced 330 million tonnes of coal that would otherwise have been burned to produce electricity by electric utility. |
