On Oct. 18, the Executive Yuan approved the most extensive revision of the Private School Law in a decade. One of the provisions of the revision, which was formulated in response to Taiwan’s move toward internationalization, allows foreign nationals to serve as principals of schools at the senior high level and above that have been established in Taiwan by foreigners or legally recognized foreign institutions. It also permits private schools at the senior high level and below to set up, with the approval of the competent authority, attached foreign curriculum departments or classes and to establish non-Taiwanese curricula to help alleviate the problem of education for the children of people who come from abroad to work in Taiwan. The revision will be implemented after it is passed by the Legislative Yuan. |
