This essay makes an analysis to the “Stele for Sangha’s Assistance to the Emperor (fuzhengbei) Incident” in the early rule of the Yuan dynasty. Many officials of the Imperial Academy were implicated and punished because of this incident, whose occurrence and outcome have a profound political significance; however, for a long time, due to the lack of evidential historical materials, the academia did not probe deeply into the matter. By looking into the bureaucratic career of Zhang Zhihan, who once worked in the Imperial Academy, this essay reveals some new facts about the “Sangha’s fuzhengbei Incident,” and explores some details of the political struggle during Qubilai’s later reign. |
